About Me
Hello and welcome to my portfolio. I am Matthew Rodrigopulle, a 22-year-old aspiring journalist based in Toronto, specializing in sports and multimedia.
In October 2020, I graduated with my Bachelor's of Journalism degree from Ryerson University.

My vast skill set includes writing and reporting on a variety of topics like hard news, sports and lifestyle, video and audio editing proficiency, data and business integration and social media fluency. I am also extensively trained and knowledgeable in working in TV broadcast settings and I am proficient in Canadian Press Style.

I am currently a freelance Broadcast Associate for Sportsnet, as well as the editor for the National Basketball Youth Mentorship Program, the sports editor for RUTV News at Ryerson University and a writer for The Leafs Nation and SB Nation's Raptors HQ.

Previously, I have also held a position as editor at FanSided's Pens Labyrinth and was a freelance writer for the Ryersonian, the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) and Last Word on Sports.

Work Experience
Sportsnet Broadcast Associate
March 2020 - Present
I work in Sportsnet’s Highlight Zone as a Broadcast Associate. I watch live professional sports games while clipping and tagging highlights for use in Sportsnet’s TV programs and across their platforms. I also Identify narratives and storylines within games, write scripts and pair them with highlight clips to create highlight packs that are ready to be read and aired nationally on television.
NBYMP Editor and Lead Writer
January 2019 - Present
I actively cover, write and report on basketball camps, games and events for the program. I also write press releases and media relations documents as needed. I also communicates with other reporters on assignments, assign stories and make sure reporters meet deadlines.
The Leafs Nation Contributor
July 2020 - Present
I write for The Leafs Nation, a Toronto Maple Leafs blog under The Nation Network. I pitch ideas, write news articles and editorials about the team, while analyzing statistics and analytics.
October 2018 - April 2020
I was the sports editor for RUtv News, Ryerson University's campus broadcast team. I attended Ryerson Rams sports games, interviewed players, reported on the games and either wrote game recaps or filmed and edited video recaps. As editor, I also managed a team of reporters, assigned them to games and story ideas and edited their work.
October 2016 - July 2020
I wrote for FanSided's Toronto Maple Leafs blog, Editor in Leaf and many articles have been feature on Fox Sports. I pitched ideas, wrote editorials about the team, analyzed statistics and analytics and communicated with a team and editor.
March 2019 - March 2020
I was the key sports reporter at the Ryersonian, the Ryerson School of Journalism's premier print and online publication. I ran the weekly sports update that aired as part of RyersonianTV's show, "RyersonianTV: This Week" every Thursday. I produced, voiced and filmed live stand-ups for highlight reels based on the Ryerson Rams and professional Toronto sports teams. I also wrote stories about Ryerson news and Ryerson sports.
Summer 2019 Season
I wrote game recaps for different games featuring several of the league's teams across Canada.
March 2017 - August 2018
I was the editor of Pens Labyrinth, a Pittsburgh Penguins blog part of the FanSided Network. I consistently wrote articles daily, communicated with and managed a staff of writers who reported to me. I created and maintained weekly schedules and team emails, assigned writers stories, ensured they met deadlines and provided editorial and technical feedback for written articles before I posted them on to the site through Wordpress. Finally, I actively managed the site's social medias including their Twitter and Facebook pages.
August 2016 - March 2017
I pitched ideas and wrote articles about NHL hockey for Last Word on Sports, covering the Toronto Maple Leafs. I communicated with an editor about my ideas and wrote editorials and game recaps.

Ryerson University Journalism
I earned my Bachelor's of Journalism degree at Ryerson University in Toronto. I maintained a 4.25 GPA throughout my four years and gained extensive training in journalistic work.
